1. Fear. We all fear making a mistake. We don't want to look bad by messing up. I think that if you aren't making mistakes, you aren't trying hard enough. We fear not keeping up with our own expectations of what the technology should include. Remember that taking one lesson and adding elements of technology is all we need to do. Eventually, those small things we've done will add up to many great activities for our students. Integrating technology will become so easy that it will be second nature. Sometimes we fear that the students won't like the task. Breaking up the monotony of the same thing day in and day out will be a breath of fresh air for our students. Another fear actually happens all too often; the technology won't work.
2. Lack of experience. As I stated in the previous paragraph, the more we do it, the easier it will become. It just takes getting out of our comfort zones, as scary as that is, and do it.
3. Lack of time to learn and understand the technology available to us. With the changing of programs, funding, and access, it can be frustrating to get the hang of a program then have your district take it away because of lack of funding. That has happened more than once to people I know.
The solution to all these obstacles is the same: Just try it. As we continue to have a positive attitude about the task of learning new things, we can teach our students more than how to solve for x. We can teach them that perseverance is a quality we all need. We can teach them that you never stop learning.
