Design Process Model
Determining my graphic for this week’s assignment has been the most difficult yet. Writing a Research Paper is the goal for the unit I am working on creating, and thus far, all of the materials have been how to get to that end. However, to make a graphic that represents that end was seemingly impossible. “The three cyclical components of the ACE model—analyze, create, and evaluate—together do a good job of explaining the design process for an instructional visual, but they do not really describe where you start or how you get started, often the toughest part of all” (73). Which is exactly where I got stuck.
After reading the assigned chapter about using the ACE process, I still wasn’t sure where to start, so I started at the end. My ultimate goal is to have our 6th – 8th grade students write a research paper about someone or a group of people who took a stand for something in history. I analyzed the purpose of the assignment and the questions that should be answered within their paper. What did your person/group of people stand for/what did they want changed? What was going on in society that begged for that change? What were the circumstances that let to the societal situation? How does their stand affect me today? I wanted my visual to express the questions that should be answered in their research and paper.
I chose the background picture, which was retrieved from creative commons, to represent people standing together to create change, which is represented by the ripples that surround the group of people. However, I didn’t want the picture to be the main focus of the graphic so I made it only 20% transparency so it looks more like a watermark than a graphic to focus on.
I created the top text to look like the actual National History Day logo without their background. The rest of the text in the graphic are the questions that need to be answered within students’ research and papers.
