Universal Design
Don't Stand on the Toilet Seat
Living in Idaho, not too far from Yellowstone National Park, there was a big to-do about a sign with the instructions to the left.
Yellowstone hosted more than 4 million visitors last year. Nearly 159,000 of those visitors arrived aboard one of 5,224 tour buses. An assumption that the majority of those bus passengers are from another country is pretty safe.
Additionally, having personal experience being the passenger on a tour bus in Asia, it would have been helpful for me to have a sign to understand how to use their bathrooms.
This image is a good example of Universal Design (UD) because, as Lohr explains, the purpose of UD is to “make learning and information accessible in the broader sphere of life for all people” (2003). Visuals relate the interface between a person and a larger system” (2003). This image definitely shows that interface.
